Theodore Roosevelt and the River of Doubt

Theodore Roosevelt set out on his journey sometime in December of 1913. He set sail with a ship full of men ready to start mapping and exploring, South America. The place they were meaning to map and explore was the River of Doubt, which is in the Amazon Rainforest. On his journey he suffered from a severe case of Malaria and after cutting his leg on a boulder developed a bacterial infection that could end up killing him. As time went on he just kept getting worse and finally got a deadly temperature of 105 degrees, but luckily he survived through that and made it back home safe and sound.

Online Safety

In this article a 13- year girl named Megan Meier committed suicide from online bullying. She was bullied by a 16- year old boy who went by the name Josh Evans. Later to find out that it really wasn’t a16- year old boy it was one of Megan’s friend’s moms. This girl was no longer friends with Megan and her mom wanted to see if she would say anything about her daughter online. Later on nothing happened so she abruptly stopped this friendship and started sending messages saying that Megan was fat and that she was a slut. This little girl already suffers from depression and attention deficit disorder committed suicide because “Josh Evans” said that the world would be better off if she wasn’t in it anymore and that he heard from other people that she was a mean and cruel person. In my mind this was a terrible thing to do to a girl who had so much going for her. I don’t even know how a mom could do this to a child, especially someone who used to be friends with her daughter. This whole thing could have been prevented by the mom just confronting Megan or her parents and asking them to stop saying stuff about her daughter. Another way this could have been prevented was if she had her daughter and Megan sit down and have them try to work things out and ultimately try to be friends again.

Google

When you sign up for Google they ask you for personal information to create an account. They later combine all your personal information and other information from Google services to add to your account. Now for certain services you can opt out of combining this kind of information. Also now you don’t have to sign in. You can use YouTube, Search and other Google products even if you aren’t signed into your Google account. Finally you can also request Google delete which is where if you don’t want your Google account anymore you request them to delete all your information off line from it after a reasonable time period of shutting down your account.

                In this article it talks about how Google is changing their Policy Privacy for using their website. They are making everything more confidential and private so people will be safer while online. They are also collecting new information and combining it with the old to make it more updated. This article states that this new policy will be in full effect March 1^st, 2012. This new policy will allow Google to show better targeted online ads to people because it can take into account what you searched and the videos you watched based on that specific subject or by previous searches. Lastly these changes include allowing Google to combine data about specific users’ activities across more Google services when they are logged into different accounts with different companies. Basically Google is paying more attention to what you are searching and to give you better ads.

I agree with the article because these new terms will keep you safer while searching online. It also is very convenient because you can search stuff on Google like videos and you don’t have to be signed into see some of it. Another reason why I agree that this is a good thing is because when you give all your information to create an account on here they will ask for a bunch of different stuff and then combine it all together to make it more efficient and more confidential. Lastly, when your done with your Google account you can just request Google delete and Google will delete all your information from the system so it made it look like you didn’t even have one in the first place.

Copyright Infringement

In 2006, writer Gordon Roy Parker sued Google for copyright infringement. Parker posted a chapter of his book on Usenet bulletin board which was then indexed by Google.  Gordon Roy Parker sued Google because Google archived the book and provided “excerpts from his website in search results”.  This type of work was file. In the end Google ended up winning the case because judged stated that “ When and ISP automatically and temporarily stores data without human intervention so that the system can operate and transmit data to its users, the necessary element of volition is missing.”

Internet Safety

I believe Internet Safety is making sure you stay safe and being careful on line. The three most important things about being safe online is, to make sure the sight you go on is safe, if something weird or suspicious comes up go tell your parents right away and show them the website. Next, don’t go on any websites that may seem dangerous. Lastly, don’t give out any of your personal information online it could potentially put you in some kind of danger.  From Deputy Krupp’s presentation I learned that even if you think when you delete something off your phone the police can easily trace it and find it and get back. I can improve upon just not clicking on random websites and actually take the time and look to see what the website is.

Feed Reader

I liked bloglines better than Google Reader. First, when you added a site it showed up right away with tabs of the latest news from that site. Second when you copy and pasted the URL in the box and a warning would pop up saying that this feed could not be found. Lastly, instead of going to Google to search for websites they had a browsing tab on bloglines that had categories for different websites that had feeds. I liked bloglines because it was faster and more efficient than Google Reader.
